Do I have to declare a major on my university application?

No, you don’t. You may apply as an undeclared freshman and you are allowed to declare your major later on, before your junior year.

Are there any advantages to declaring a major as a freshman applicant?

Although sometimes it is easier to get accepted as an undeclared freshman, there are some advantages to declaring a major early.

• You can write much more powerful application essays if you already know what you are going to do after the university. That’s because you can structure your essay around how you actually arrived to this discovery - a student, who already knows what career she wishes to pursue as opposed to the others, sounds much more mature. Thus, you can actually increase your chances of getting accepted, even though as an undeclared you might face less competition!

• You can be much more focused on your major related core courses if you already know what your major will be. 

• You can be much more focused in your networking efforts if you are aware of what you are going to do in the future. Thinking ahead in terms of course selection (electives) and inquiring from the proper sources (older students with the same major) about optimal decisions are invaluable to get ahead of your competition. Thus you will have a better chance to find a higher paying job upon graduation than your competition. 

• You can be much more focused in terms of your on campus and off campus extracurricular activities if you know your future. Extracurricular activities harmonizing with your career goals are another way to get ahead of your competition while “hunting” for the highest paying jobs. 

Can I be great at doing just about anything I set my mind to?

One of the greatest challenges in your life is to unchain your talent – to discover the purpose of your life. For many people this is a natural process, as they benefit from a knowledgeable, nurturing environment. For others, it is not a straightforward process: they succumb to the false notion that making a lot of money is the ultimate goal, when in fact serving a higher cause while enjoying what they are doing should be their guiding principle. The key is to know yourself, especially if you are pushed around by a NOT so nurturing environment into territories not reflecting your interests. So the answer is no, you cannot be great at everything, although you can certainly improve yourself in any area of your life. However, you should NOT pursue a career in an environment unsuitable to you – for instance, a predominantly introverted, analytical person would make a terrible salesperson just as a predominantly persuasive, extroverted person would make a horrific scientist. An excellent career advisor can help you get to know yourself and find your suitable work environment with the corresponding subset of matching professions. Thus, you can be financially successful while also enjoying what you do for a living. Not to mention the most important factor of happiness: you can be proud of yourself because you serve a noble cause of which you are part of. You will not be merely envied by others, BUT you will actually become a respected member of your community, a true leader who will be the role model of young people!
